Travelling the World on a Budget: A Weekend Well Spent in Lithuania’s Capital

When my cousin and I decided to spend a weekend in Vilnius, we knew we were heading somewhere a bit under the radar. Lithuania’s capital isn’t as well-known as some other European destinations, but that’s why we wanted to visit. Our trip began with an early Saturday morning flight from London Stansted, landing in Vilnius around noon. With public transport making it easy to get around, we were ready to explore this beautiful city.

Day 1: Discovering the Old Town and Gediminas’ Tower

We stayed in a charming hotel in Vilnius Old Town, an area that feels like stepping into a fairytale with its cobblestone streets and pastel-coloured buildings. After checking in, we headed straight for Cathedral Square, the heart of the city. The iconic Vilnius Cathedral and its impressive bell tower are a must-see, and the open square is perfect for soaking in the city’s atmosphere.

From there, we wandered along Pilies Street, which is lively and lined with shops, cafes, and street performers. For a bit of adventure, we climbed up to Gediminas’ Tower. The panoramic views of Vilnius from the top were incredible – red rooftops, lush green spaces, and a mix of modern and historic architecture. The climb was well worth the effort, especially during the golden hour.

Dinner was a hearty Lithuanian feast. We tried cepelinai, traditional potato dumplings stuffed with meat, and kugelis, a delicious potato pudding. The portions were generous, and the flavours were comforting – perfect after a day of exploring.

Day 2: Užupis and the Museum of Illusions

On Sunday, we ventured into Užupis, a quirky and artistic neighbourhood that has declared itself an independent “republic.” Its constitution is displayed on a wall in multiple languages, and the streets are full of galleries, street art, and creative energy. The Angel of Užupis statue is a central landmark, and we took plenty of photos as we wandered through the district’s charming streets.

One of the highlights of our trip was the Museum of Illusions. It’s a fun, interactive experience that’s great for all ages. The exhibits play with perspective, light, and reflections, making it the perfect spot for taking unique photos. We spent over an hour there, laughing and marveling at the creative installations.

Before heading to the airport, we explored Gediminas Avenue, one of Vilnius’s main streets. We stopped for coffee and pastries at a local café and enjoyed a relaxed stroll, taking in the city’s laid-back vibe. Public transport made it easy to get to and from all the sights, and it was an affordable way to travel around the city.
