Stanstead to Sofia: A Quick Solo Escape to Sofia, Bulgaria

I chose Sofia, Bulgaria, as my first European trip post the Covid-19 pandemic (998 days since my last trip away to Prague) and my first 'Solo Trip'!

Sofia turned out to be a delightful surprise, during a short midweek escape in November. It’s one of those cities that doesn’t shout about itself but quietly charms you once you arrive.

After landing late morning, I wasted no time and headed straight to the heart of the city. Vitosha Boulevard was my first stop—a vibrant pedestrian street lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants. I grabbed a hot chocolate and indulged in a warm, flaky banitsa, a traditional Bulgarian pastry with a cheesy filling. Simple, yet absolutely comforting.

Later, I had dinner at a restaurant serving authentic Bulgarian dishes. I tried kavarma, a rich meat and vegetable stew, this was perfect for the chilly weather.

The next day was dedicated to exploring Sofia’s fascinating mix of history and architecture. The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was breathtaking, both in its grandeur and intricate detail. Nearby, I discovered the St. Sofia Church and the Ancient Serdica Ruins—traces of Roman history tucked amidst the modern cityscape.

I also wandered through Borisova Gradina, a peaceful park perfect for a quiet stroll or a moment to unwind. Sofia’s autumn charm was on full display, with golden leaves scattered everywhere.

Lunchtime introduced me to kyufte, Bulgarian-style meatballs, paired with ayran, a tangy yoghurt drink. Later, I ventured into a cosy bar showcasing local craft beers. The dark ale I tried, with hints of coffee and chocolate, was a highlight for me.

Before heading back, I took a final walk around the city centre, revisiting some favourite spots. It felt like a proper farewell to a city that had left a lasting impression.

Explore on Foot: The city is compact and easy to navigate. Walking around lets you stumble upon charming spots you might otherwise miss.

Balance Sightseeing and Relaxing: From iconic landmarks like Alexander Nevsky Cathedral to the serene Borisova Gradina, Sofia offers a nice mix of culture and calm.

Sofia may not be on everyone’s radar, but it’s a city that leaves you pleasantly surprised and longing to return. If you’re after a short, refreshing getaway with a mix of history, culture, and comfort food, it’s well worth a visit.
